Rowena ran upstairs to her room, slammed the door, and stood panting with her back to the wooden panels, her fists clenched. Her long nails bit into her palms, and she relished the pain.
âGrrrh!â She gritted her teeth and thought she probably resembled a tiger.
Sheâd had to stop herself from starting an argument with Cameron in front of all the mothers. Instead, sheâd cleaned up the kitchen and house in silence, avoiding him as much as possible by making sure they werenât in the same room together for long. Sheâd given Jamey a hurried hug good-bye and almost run out the door to drive home while he put chairs away in the storeroom.
The conversation she overheard between him and one of the fathers echoed in her ears like strikers outside a mine asking for more pay.
âSo, why are you leaving early now?â his friend asked.
âItâs time for me to go back to Jameyâs family. She needs female support in her life and stability. Weâre going to settle in Durban. Thatâs the reason Iâm ending my contract here earlier.â
How could he do such a thing? Not tell her. And why the rush? What harm in having a few months more together? Did he aim to get away from her?
She walked toward her bed and flopped down, staring at the ceiling. As the anger and questions subsided, the hurt grew from inside her gut until she couldnât bear to stare at the ceiling any longer.
Iâm exhausted. What a long and busy day. How much she appreciated all her mom had done for her those many birthday parties. The enthusiasm had worn off a little at the end of the day, with cleaning up the many paper plates of half-eaten cake. Why couldnât the kids finish the cake sheâd so painstakingly baked for them? Instead, theyâd been intent on stomping crumbs into Cameronâs carpet and all over the verandah, leaving lovely grease marks. Sheâd vacuumed, mopped, and cleaned until her back ached. And Jamey had been outside with her friends the whole afternoon. Sure, she should enjoy her friends, but it had all felt like a big, fat burden. Especially after Cameron had shown such gratefulness to her for all sheâd done for them before the party but then chatted to parents the whole afternoon and not even glanced at her.
If only her mom were still alive. She could tell her exactly how her awful afternoon had gone, in great detail. She could ask her what to do about Cameron and Jamey. Should she say something, or just walk away like she had when her friends left for the States and UK? Get on with her life as before? She had been happy despite her motherâs death. She had a fantastic studio with some really committed older students and some mothers who were friendly and supportive of her efforts. She didnât need Cameron and Jamey. Sure, Jamey probably needed her. Or did she? She was going back to her gran.
An ache filled her throat.
